Maalie is about to set of for a ten-day bird-ringing expedition in the forests and swamps of the Coto DoƱana, Andalucia, in Southern Spain. Here are some pictures taken during his last visits to the region.
The small town of El Rocio is the centre of activity Dry areas are dominated by "umbrella pines", from which "pine nuts" are gathered The "Marismas" - the wetlands of the Guadalquivir River Delta,
south of Seville, where most of the research will be undertaken.

MAte- this brings back fond memories and some intense one s too- I still remember being shell shocked at arriving and seeing all the australian gum trees and smelling them in the air!
But see the vultures and nightjars, and the castle and sharing a beer! Top Stuff!

yes... there is NO doubt in my mind that spanish food is CRAP.
Having said that:- the biological significance of the area is very much in the top 10 in the world and so I appreciate it very much.. not to mention it was Jim's retirement bash.......and therefore remains in my mind AND i would re visit...
